New Islington is the UK’s third Millennium Community project, with Urban Splash delivering the scheme as Lead Developer in partnership with Manchester City Council (New East Manchester) and English Partnerships. The project will transform a 30 acre area, previously considered to be one of the worst in Manchester, into one of the best, with quality contemporary architecture replacing the run down housing estate and derelict hospital which previously occupied the site.

New Islington will primarily be a place to live, with supporting services and local shops. Residents within the small, but tightly knit, existing community have been given a right to return to a new home within the completed development.

When completed, New Islington will provide over 1700 new homes, a health centre and a new primary school. Quality public realm, new canals and a new park on the waters edge are significant features within the Strategic Framework for the project, together with wide ranging sustainability aspirations. The water space, which is nearing completion, is the single most important element in defining the new footprint and identity of the area.

BIOGRAPHY

Richard Hattan CEng MICE MIStructE, Associate Director, Urban Splash

Richard Hattan

Richard graduated from Leeds University in 1987 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He spent the first thirteen years of his career working with engineering consultants, initially with Sir Alexander Gibb and Partners in Reading, before moving to Arup in Manchester.

A strong interest in the way that buildings and construction projects can positively affect the areas surrounding them, prompted a gradual career shift into Regeneration work.

Richard has worked for Urban Splash for over six years, where he is an Associate Director in the Manchester office. Founded in 1993, Urban Splash has successfully developed a variety of brownfield sites in regeneration areas, initially in the North West but more recently across the UK. Current projects under construction will provide over 3500 new homes and up to 3400 jobs.

Richard is currently responsible, on a day to day basis, for the New Islington project in Ancoats, Manchester, on which his presentation will be based.
