Joe Berridge of Urban Strategies Inc. will provide an introduction to the current state of affairs in Toronto, highlighting the large number of city-building initiatives that are underway, including a major reinvestment in cultural centres. Revitalisation of the waterfront is a significant element of the city’s overall strategic direction.
John Campbell of the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation will provide an overview of the Toronto Waterfront initiative, one of the largest city building projects in North America. Sustainable development and creating a spectacular public realm are key drivers of this work, which will see more than 300 hectares of new parks, 40,000 new residential units and major new employment districts for the City.


Joe Berridge has played a key role in some of the largest and most complex urban regeneration projects in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. Currently, he is helping shape the future of the Toronto waterfront, as master planning coordinator for the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation, is advising Salford and Manchester on a new vision for their riverfront and central areas. He is also leading a new masterplan and vision for the 100-ha South Docklands area in Cork, Ireland. He recently prepared a concept plan for Governors Island in New York harbour.
Joe has played a major role in the regeneration of Manchester, St. Louis, Detroit and Niagara Falls, NY. His development plans for Silvertown Quays and Canada Water, the last large sites in the London Docklands, both recently won intense design and development competitions. He has lectured at universities in Canada and the US and has served on many urban design award and competition juries. He is a regular conference speaker and frequent contributor to planning journals.

John Campbell is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation. The Corporation is responsible for leading the estimated $17 billion renewal of Toronto’s Central Waterfront. Before joining the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation in April 2003, John was a senior executive at Brookfield Properties. He headed up the Canadian property management services subsidiary and also played a leadership role in the development of the company’s most prestigious property – BCE Place; directing construction, marketing and leasing of the $1.2 billion award winning project. Prior to joining Brookfield in 1989, John held senior positions in the real estate divisions of Bimcor Inc. and Bell Canada. He has an MBA from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Carleton University.
