WaterfrontExpo 2006, Glasgow was the largest event in the series to date. With 553 participants from 28 countries, the audience was global. The City of Glasgow - and River Clyde in particular - provided the event with an ideal backdrop. Delegates were impressed with the variety and scale of developments taking place (and planned) along the Clyde.
This year marked the start of site visits and tours within the conference programmes. These proved to be extremely popular with delegates, many informing us that the visits created vibrancy and variety to the conference programme and also enabled them to ‘connect’ with the city. Up to 70 delegates participated in some site visits. It is our intention to continue and develop this aspect of the event.
The Waterfront Tour on the afternoon of the 17th October proved to be a real winner with around 140 participants. The 2 ½ hour trip down the River Clyde was fascinating with many of the party commenting that they were amazed to see how much was going on along the length of the River Clyde. A highlight of the trip was the excellent commentary provided by Clyde Waterfront.
The social and networking events proved to be both well-attended and enjoyable. In particular, the Gala Reception in Glasgow’s fabulous Civic Chambers was a very grand affair complete with a piper and musicians from a local music academy. The Speakers’ Lunch on 19th October was attended by almost all the event’s 37 speakers plus a mixture of VIPs from around the world.
The exhibition was the largest yet in the series with 45 exhibiting firms. We understand from exhibitors, delegates and visitors that the exhibition was a welcome addition to the conference and that it was a valuable source of contacts.
The 2006 event also marked the moment that we ran parallel conference streams. Delegates were able to see 12 international case studies, two keynote presentations and four panel discussions in the main auditorium. The focus sessions were staged in an adjoining room and were also well-attended. Several delegates that have attended all four WaterfrontExpo conferences commented that this conference programme was the best yet. Feedback from delegates suggests that the mix of case studies and other subject matter was good and that most presentations were of a high standard. We are always trying to improve though – so additional comments are welcome: markbeaumont@mediageneration.co.uk
