WaterfrontExpo Amsterdam 2004

Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 19 - 21 October 2004

Event Summary:

Feedback from participants suggests that WaterfrontExpo Amsterdam 2004 was a resounding success. It is now widely accepted that the correct formula for WaterfrontExpo  has been established: a high-level international case-study based  conference with a supporting exhibition.

For many the highlight of the event was the boat tour. A combination of unusually good weather, a fascinating tour route and an excellent commentor (from the Planning Department  of the Amsterdam Municipality) made this tour memorable.

Amsterdam itself and in particular, the Passenger Terminal, proved to be an excellent choice. This experience will guide us in our choice of the next host city. Expect an announcement by the end of November 2004! We expect the host city to be selected from the following: Dublin, Cork, Riga, Berlin and Valencia.

As was the case at WaterfrontExpo 2003 in London, we were honoured to have participants from more than 40 countries.

Thanks:

We would like to thank all our sponsors and supporters. In particular, we would like to thank The Royal Institute of British Architects for their ongoing support and the Municipality of Amsterdam for their enthusiastic contribution.

The Conference:

A very intensive and varied conference programme featured 13 waterfronts from around the world: Almere, Durban, Dublin, Shanghai, Blackpool, Amsterdam, Ho Chi Minh City, Aker Brygge, Berlin, Valetta, Hakata, Huangzhou and Cork. Once again, feedback from delegates suggested that the case studies are the most valued aspect of this event. We will continue to bring interesting case studies from around the world to WaterfrontExpo: they enable participants to learn from the experiences of others and will, we hope, contribute to waterfront development "best practice".

The Exhibition:

The exhibition at WaterfrontExpo was considered by delegates to be an important part of the overall event. All felt that the exhibition complemented the conference very well. The exhibition featured around 22 booths. We plan to put more effort into growing this part of the event - ideally to level of around 35 - 50 booths.
